At last, we’re back in the theatres. However, it doesn’t mean we’re forgetting our little catch-up of the month with three beautiful rock records to listen to. Flashes.
THREE APPLES IN THE ORANGE GROVE – THE MERGERS
If we’re having fun labelling bands with genres, those of garage rock and psychedelic would be most accurate to describe Three Apples In The Orange Grove by German band, The Mergers. And it’s only fitting! This record seems to have been infused with the entirety of the sixties, from the mix to the rhythms including the background vocals and catching singing. Melancholic or dancy, the songs are flowing with harmony and it’s hard to ignore the energy of Outta My Way, the solo of Mauerpark, and the softness of In Course of Time and Maybe All You Need is Time. Full and colourful, it’s one of our favourite of the month.
TO ENJOY IS THE ONLY THING – MAPLE GLIDER
To Enjoy Is The Only Thing invites contemplation, to tenderness, to freeze-frame. Maple Glider presents moments of happiness caught on the spot and translates them into supple and dreamy pop-folk songs. Like a polaroid collection of which the dates are fading but the memories attached to them are crystal clear, these tracks are floating into space with humility. We take our time here and Maple Glider’s voice bears a light echo that completes the pastel aesthetic of it all. As Tradition, View From This Side, Good Thing or Performer, everything here is intimate, universal, close to the heart.
½ DOVE – ½ PIGEON – MICKO AND THE MELLOTRONICS
A touch psyche, a touch provocative, very energetic, Micko And The Mellotronics’ new album is one that we weren’t expecting at all. Yet, without a warning, ½ Dove – ½ Pigeon has arrived in our lives. Convinced from the first listen to Sick & Tired, and it gets stronger with Noisy Neighbours, The Finger, and The Now. Clearly, it’s the type of rock we’re after, sharp and bold. Ironic and contrasted with You Killed My Father, the provocation takes another shape. The humour in this record is matching every chord and sound of this musical universe. It can be surprising at first, but we love it.
