For our monthly catch-up session, the three records we’ve selected come from very different places. A talented musician discovered on Twitch, a surprising artist in her rebirth moment, and a logical and energetic follow-up album, they’re all on the menu.
QUETZAL – TIP STEVENS
If it’s through his traditional musical stream on Sunday nights on Twitch (that we do recommend) that we’ve first heard of the French artist Tip Stevens, getting to discover him through his new EP is another thing. A beautiful thing. Quetzal is a colourful record with touches of melancholia that brings back summer in the middle of autumn. Mr. Sun has a really fitting name. The Moon isn’t left behind and shines as bright with Flowers to the Moon. Virtuoso Tip Stevens is the author of a wonderful musical universe. His previous works are going to quench our thirst for this music that Quetzal has started.
APRÈS LES HEURES GRISES – PAULINE CROZE
Moments of soul, R’n’B and electro are modifying the curves of Pauline Croze’s songs on this new album, Après les heures grises. Phobe, Crever l’écran, La rocade, Hippodrome are surprising tracks, opening us up, moving us around, and showing a need for space, going out, meeting people, meeting and loving oneself again. Pauline Croze doesn’t give up on her guitar and finds this musical evolution in harmony with her lyrics and energy. If our favourite is still Je suis un renard, these changes feel like a rebirth.
A MATTER OF LIFE AND LOVE – SKINNY LISTER
British band Skinny Lister has poured every ounce of energy it had into this new record, A Matter of Life and Love. Immediately gripping, we can’t help ourselves and stomp the ground firmly, following their rhythms, smiling and feeling very much alive. Damn the Amsterdam (featuring The Longest Johns) is amongst these intoxicating tracks. With deep Celtic roots, they are still open to more diverse influences. In the end, even waking up at five in the morning can’t survive the infectious joy coming from Breakfast at Heathrow, one of our favourites.
