FOR ONCE – MÉLYS
It’s in a tender and fairy-tale-like universe that Mélys decides to grow and welcomes us with For Once. This song, which gives its name to this new EP, is a love letter to time taken for oneself, to solitude that can be scary but which, after a breakup or a life change, can also be welcome. This is how Mélys seems to reconnect with her dreams, and her light guitar notes highlight all her hopes and joys. What an incredible first track! What’s next is made of the same wood.
November lets the sunshine in the heart of colder times. Its vivid colours bring the best out of the autumn’s orange leaves, calling back spring and summer. All of it is due to Mélys’ singing on a fresher songwriting. The artist rightfully takes her time here. There’s a lot to discover between the lines of her guitar and lyrics. For the latter, Mélys doesn’t stop herself to English words and sings in Spanish on Piel, warm, dancing and hypnotic. The progression is superb and makes it an essential track.
Going back to English with Josephine, with strong guitars in the background, there is something deeply blues-rock in this atmosphere. Yet, it’s melancholia and sober arrangements that she chooses to end her EP with, through 24. With For Once, Mélys proposes a journey and a reflection on growing up, fully or not. Any way you look at it, it seems that she protects her inner child greatly through her songwriting, inspired by friendships, family and lovers. To me, she does it wonderfully well and has created a sublime soundtrack in the process.
