This solid album progresses like the history of rock itself. It’s Swim For Shore, and it’s the newest released by Lorraine-Dietrich. Review.
SWIM FOR SHORE – LORRAINE-DIETRICH
For their second album, Swim For Shore, we can feel Lorraine-Dietrich is passionate. Made of several already-released singles and four superb new ones, the trio dives into what looks like an exploration of both rock and their psyche. From the first track Swim For Shore, the band summons large bodies of water through their riffs. Everything is hypnotic from the get-go. A dash of ska wraps it up for a fun, harmonious and unique finish. Then, it’s a vintage air that breathes through the first notes of Beauty of Flowers. Yet, it’s freshness and lightness that captivates. There’s an insouciance feel in the backing vocals that’s comforting.
That insouciance keeps on shining on the colourful One Day You’ll Know. A clear piano, resonating backings, everything surrounds the uniquely textured main vocals. Lorraine-Dietrich shows off their romantic side with With You I’m Better, in the lyrics and its soft and pop beat. They’re consistent with their summery vintage sound, and this one is heart-warming. To start with contrast, there’s Nobody Likes to Listen, which is darker in its themes and bass, in a nice progressive rock that never completely breaks the build-up atmosphere. It does bring some nice nuances to it, though.
Whilst Yearn is bright, and Still Alive really charming, the rest of the record gets darker. In a more classic-rock feel, Hard To Be Alone and Expectation might be more obscure, they’re filled up with a sort of motivation. To me, the effects on the vocals might be responsible for this. Lorraine-Dietrich closes Swim For Shore with We Shall Be Reborn. Here, they’re getting into hard-rock with a really well-crafted solo. Like a journey through the History of rock, from its 60s effects to its 80s riffs, this record carries a great harmony through and through thanks to the trio’s closeness. Every element is distinct and forms a solid whole.
