With an adventurous electro-pop, Angélica Garcia explores the relationship between body and spirit through the superb Gemelo. Review.
GEMELO – ANGÉLICA GARCIA
If, at first, Gemelo doesn’t match my favourite genres, Angélica Garcia has breathed some magic into it and it moved me. In its pop productions, it’s her heart that marks the rhythm. On top of this, she reminds the world that Spanish is the second most-spoken language in the United States and that America doesn’t limit itself to that country only. Therefore, American music shouldn’t limit itself to English words. Reflexiones shines as bright as the Moon’s on the surface of a lake in the night. Introspective and dreamlike, it’s a soft introduction that speaks volumes about the rest of the record.
Exploring sonic layers as much as she does her thoughts, she doesn’t forget her body and touches on pain and identities. The bass lines are so deep they seem to come from the earth. But her voice is so clear it seems to come from the divine. Color De Dolor shows it through memorable lines and a refined production.
Questions about pain and identities are also back into the dark and intriguing Juanita. And Angélica Garcia continues to explore all facets of it through two videos with mathematically opposed aesthetics for the same song. Attentive to both her negative emotions and hopeful glimmers, the artist walks on experimental paths. Ángel [eterna] and Mírame, with two distinct atmospheres, open on fascinating landscapes. Y Grito grabs all of my attention though, thanks to saturated riffs and its strong attitude! I fell for it immediately as it blends genres I love with the artist’s powerful electro. To me, it does belong to mixture rock.
El Que, which is up next, is a lot darker but keeps that power going, and Intuición softly goes back to the spirit. The body is still there though, and acts under the influence of artistic intuitions, and so does Gemini. To end it, the warmth of Paloma spreads out just enough to get us to relax, and by doing so comes in contrast with the darkest moments of this record. If Gemelo wasn’t obvious to me at first, Angélica Garcia’s savoir-faire has been able to convince me. I really devoured the album… so I am certain it’ll give your summer a great rhythm!
