For the new album from The Pinpricks, This Stuff Is Poison, don’t worry: no antidote needed! Review of a banger!
THIS STUFF IS POISON – THE PINPRICKS
In addition to possessing incredible energy, This Stuff Is Poison by The Pinpricks is packed with bangers! Add to that a uniquely textured voice and a good dose of feminine rage, and it’s become a favourite for me. The opening track is the flamboyant punk Sugar K, which sets the tone right away. The production is clean, the chorus is catchy, the themes are dark, and the guitar leads the way. It’s simply flawless! But of course, it doesn’t stop there. The German band has delivered a remarkable album this year.
My attention is constantly drawn back into the music with each new track. Killing Trap is captivating, the pop-punk vibe of I’m Not Sorry is infectious, and No More No draws on more classic 80s punk influences, but they’re perfectly used. This is something that really fuels the band, who then use it sparingly to create a well-balanced sound and an instantly recognizable style. Then, Anyway and I Just Wanna Feel play with a really effective pop side.
IfYouOnlyHadTheTime kicks off the second half at full throttle. There’s no time to waste because there are more new favourites to follow. Tell Me Mother becomes an instant hit from the first listen with its bassline. With rawer sounds, diving into pure garage punk, Figure It Out and The Drugs set the place on fire. But it’s undoubtedly the effervescent Stupid that makes the band unmissable on the scene, with lyrics that are really simple but effective—just the way I like it. It’s fun, stupidly good, and exactly what makes this one of the best albums of the year. If The Pinpricks are really serving up poison with This Stuff Is Poison, don’t give me the antidote! A discovery not to be missed.
