This week, the playlist is full of contrasts: from biting energy to introspection, and then light—it has something for all your moods. Let’s go!
We kick things off with a bang, as the impressive Nova Twins return with their new track Monsters. From the very first listen, the power of this mixture rock track grabs you right in the guts! The playlist opens this week with a refreshing dose of feminine bite. Speaking of which, Ménades are also back with their freshly released Good Partner. It’s punk, it’s disruptive, it’s full throttle! Right after, we have a discovery: Marlene Larsen with What You’re Waiting For. She’s got character, and her rock, infused with diverse influences, leaves quite an impression. The legendary band Skunk Anansie joins the mix with the poignant, motivating, and political An Artist Is An Artist. Both its message and execution are sublime!
Next up, we have Pink Poison by I Don’t Wear Pink, which is no less political. In addition to being quite promising, this track takes the playlist in a darker direction. Naturally, I followed it with Shadowpain by O’Phantom—and yes, it sends shivers down your spine in this grey January. Then there’s Phwoar with Waiting for the Sun—because that’s what we’re all doing. And sometimes it’s more a state of mind than a matter of weather. Sam Akpro reflects on darkness too, getting more introspective, with the utterly captivating Evenfall.
Rhia Motherseal then brings the climax of this dark, even gothic arc with the intriguing, mysterious, and chilling Praying Mantis. Because I love contrasts, the luminous sound of OK Go follows, with their wild video included, in the semi-pessimistic A Stone Only Rolls Downhill. We then pivot to blues with Origins by Léo Benmass, bringing warmth back into the mix. Finally, Cassia closes the playlist this week with their tender new pop single, friends.
