FLASH: AND THE ADJACENT POSSIBLE – OK GO

OK Go And The Adjacent Possible

And The Adjacent Possible marks the long-awaited return of OK Go, tinged with nostalgia and a gaze fixed firmly on the future. Review.

AND THE ADJACENT POSSIBLE – OK GO

And The Adjacent Possible is only OK Go’s fifth album. Over nearly thirty years of career, that might seem like a modest output. Yet, the band continues to delight with a sound that straddles the line between rock and pop — sometimes with crisp riffs, sometimes with soft melodies. The result is mature, catchy, and just as effective as ever. Visually, they’re still just as inventive and captivating. You can feel the instinct and the nostalgia, without slipping into the “things were better back then” trap. In both lyrics and sound, OK Go stays forward-looking, blending their best ingredients into something fresh.

The album opens with rich, saturated textures on Impulse Purchase — like a gentle purr. It’s followed by the radiant and beautiful (though not entirely optimistic) A Stone Only Rolls Downhill. With Love, the sound seems to get heavier, yet there’s still a prevailing softness. That sense deepens with the poppier A Good, Good Day at Last. Each track explores a constant search for happiness, capturing life’s best moments without denying the worst — but without letting them dominate either. Time is limited; let’s be empathetic. The vintage pop of Fantasy vs. Fantasy adds even more gentleness and a touch of dreaminess, while This Is How It Ends lets sadness and melancholy bloom slowly and sincerely.

The band returns to groovier sounds with Take Me With You, and cranks up the electricity on Better Than This. Once again, OK Go shows their talent for moving effortlessly between styles while keeping the album’s heart cohesive and harmonious — flirting with surprise and the unexpected, much like in their iconic videos. They touch on the epic with Golden Devils, before whisking us away on a holiday with Once More with Feeling. Going Home brings back that nostalgic spark mentioned earlier, and then, it’s time to wrap up. OK Go closes And The Adjacent Possible with a note of encouragement for us all. Don’t Give Up Now is soft, delicate, and the perfect final note for the album.
