CHAMELEON LIME WHOOPIEPIE is Chi- and her Whoopies diving again into a colourful genre mash-up with Whoop It Up. Review.
WHOOP IT UP – CHAMELEON LIME WHOOPIEPIE
Whoop It Up is the second LP by CHAMELEON LIME WHOOPIEPIE, and there’s no question of them stepping away from their core identity. The genre blend, by now closer to a smoothie than anything else, is completely non-negotiable. So-so life sets the tone with laid-back, warm energy in its pop hit with a touch of funk. Growing follows with an evolving flow that swings between classic rap, fresh and easy to follow, and a catchy pop chorus. Ready Yeah follows naturally, with rapper TAKE-M joining the party. It’s the first of many collaborations, all well-balanced. The brass sections continue to carve out their space, and the chorus is bound to stick with many listeners!
Cranky then scratches the itch for turntablism before Donkey Song storms in and tears through everything in its path. Leaning more into rock, it’s the standout banger of the album for me. Sleepy Monkey holds its own with heavy guitars and a subtle piano. Once again, we’re right in the middle of a smooth, unexpected and slick, genre-bending smoothie. Fancy another hit of funk with Flower before heading into the addictive, galactic ballad Secret March? These unexpected flavours really hit the mark!
With Reach, is the second collaboration here, this time with PES, once again in a vibrant, saturated and punchy universe. I Know features MadeinTYO, bringing in more electronic sounds and exploring different sonic landscapes. Can’t Hold Back is Coolboi’s turn, continuing the rap journey of the album before diving into the ravey Cookie Junkie with Rony Rex. Tin Toy is the final original track, sitting somewhere between pop and jazz, as if to complete the loop. But CHAMELEON LIME WHOOPIEPIE actually closes Whoop It Up all with a new edit of Reach, softer, slower, and clearer. It’s harmonious, tangy, vibrant, and a new favourite of mine!
