An ode to imperfection and self-understanding, stillness, stop: you have a right to remember is a superb introspective project by Any Other. Review.
STILLNESS, STOP: YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO REMEMBER – ANY OTHER
At first, on Stillness, Stop’s jazzy rhythms, and later on those more folk by Zoe’s Seeds they explore love relationships and friendships, without ignoring the negative. With a vivid piano, acoustic guitar, and heartfelt vocals, Any Other leaves a deep mark. The atmospheres are always delicate, and incredibly just in their lyrics. But when they evoke their relationship with their parents on Awful Thread, the rain that accompanies piano and violin amplifies the pain in their voice. It’s a track that broke my heart from start to finish.
The catchy If I Don’t Care brings strength by letting go of what can’t be controlled. Then, the might of the vocals frees an anger, recognizing what awakened it, without pain. The backing vocals of Second Thought, the orchestrations of Need of Affirmation, and the subtlety of Extra Episode are graceful moments, small windows on the artist’s spirit. Indistinct Chatter finishes the album with optimism, a pure semi-instrumental, delicate, and filled with promises. Any Other seems to leave the conversation by stillness, stop: you have a right to remember with peace.
