FLASH: PRELUDE TO ECSTASY – THE LAST DINNER PARTY

The Last Dinner Party - Prelude To Ecsatsy

British phenomenon The Last Dinner Party has released their debut album, Prelude to Ecstasy. Let’s take a break and review this immensely promising record.

PRELUDE TO ECSTASY – THE LAST DINNER PARTY

The band’s ascension is only beginning. It’s impossible to not hear about The Last Dinner Party right now. And their debut album, Prelude To Ecstasy, was one of the most anticipated albums of the year. Is it up to expectation? Oh, my, absolutely. Already praised by the critic, Prelude To Ecstasy deserves all the attention it gets. I’m joining the standing ovation, as the atmosphere transports me. Fantastically produced by James Ford, also on the drums on some tracks, the record is primarily the creation of The Last Dinner Party: Abigail Morris on vocals, Georgia Davies on the bass, Emily Roberts on the guitar and flute, Lizzie Mayland on the guitar, and Aurora Nishevci on the organ, piano, conducting, and more. The band is impressive already on paper with their multi-instrumentalist savoir-faire.

And it goes on with the sound. Indeed, in the opening, Prelude to Ecstasy, the band presents a pure orchestral track, mysterious and epic, worthy of Hollywood Golden Age films. White, red, black, and sepia are the dominating colours, the texture is strong and harmonizes the whole record. And that from the first act and its 80s synths meeting the 70s clear guitars and the 90s grunge bass… The passion on Burn Alive balances the open wound of On Your Side, or the one, more subtle, on their interlude Gjuha.

In the second act, some tracks already belong to posterity: Nothing Matters and Sinner might be the two main examples. Their energy is visceral, and the harmony is detailed. Caesar on a TV Screen and Beautiful Boy are complete each other, both grand and shy. The Feminine Urge and My Lady of Mercy have a wonderful consistency, the first flirting with pop, the second flirting with punk. Portrait of a Dead Girl is progressive, fine, and gripping. Lastly, Mirror is the resolution I was expecting. Solemn and as grand as the rest, it’s the ultimate resolution. The sun sets on the mysteries of this dramatic party they’ve started. By doing so, they set the bar high for what’s to come. The Last Dinner Party wanted to bring people together in their hedonistic evening with Prelude to Ecstasy. They’ve done a lot more than that.
