Intense in many ways, the playlist I propose this week should make you feel something. Bands are coming back, others are new. There’s a bit of everything.
The intro for Tablefox’s new single could wake up the dead. It’s Don’t Wait For Me To Be What You Want Me To Be. Behind this long name, there’s a deep and powerful alt-rock sound coming from its guitars, and a clarity in the vocals. It’s a great way to kick off the playlist this week, don’t you think? The lovely awakened zombie will want to stay for what’s next. Swagger by Saint Social is up and raging. With its mad energy, it’s one of these hyper-catchy rock tracks that will bring up a smile anywhere. Next up is Annie Taylor, roaring with Push Me. Playing it cool, her energy infuses her notes progressively for a strong finish. The spicy guitars of The Vaniers are following up promptly. And the Toronto band is very convincing with the upbeat Charlie.
Then, one of my favourite bands is raging again: The Warning. The three sisters are back, announcing an album soon (of course it’ll have its review), and the massive banger that is Hell You Call A Dream. I love it. And I also adore the crazy curious, super punk Donnie Brasco by Desmerelda, also back on the blog with their references-packed video. Can’t miss it. Then, rather than speaking to the oracle of Delphi, I prefer checking in with the French trio of enraged musicians: Pythies. With Eclipse, they give a glimpse of what they’re capable of, and it works! Next, Lia Woods comes up with another kind of energy with Blonde. It’s both lively and heartbreaking, another kind of intensity.
Later, let’s make a turn to reach the neons of Feet Off The Fire by Dana Ave. The vocals are charming, but it’s the chorus and its blues accents held in a solid rock that charms most. Similarly, but with a marked presence of folk, Pipistrella has us singing in Swedish on Någon Annans Fel. It roughly translates as ‘Someone else’s fault’. A punk heart and a free spirit give birth to that smile-bringing attitude. Darker in its lyrics, but still with a gripping rhythm, Laura Humber opens the fascinating, and heavy, The Devil’s Advocate. I shiver as the terrifying toxic story is unfolding in the vocals. That makes me crave an extra-sweet one to close the playlist this week. And Lavender fields by Addy Lamaute fits the bill perfectly here – melancholic, it’s a sober folk song with healing powers.
