FLASH: FUTURE MONDAYS – FUTURE MONDAYS

Future Mondays

Passionate, Future Mondays released their self-titled EP at the end of last year. Gripping from the first play, here’s why. Review.

FUTURE MONDAYS – FUTURE MONDAYS

At the end of last year, I was in a weird spot of important change. At the same time, Future Mondays released their self-titled EP. Future Mondays – that’s a question I’ve asked myself at the time, and still do sometimes. What will Mondays look like for me in the future? Between uncertainty, anxiety, optimism, and motivation, my feelings got mixed up. Oddly, I find myself listening to this EP now. And it seems to encapsulate that moment very well.

First, epic drums and grand synths rise to play along that guitar hook on Play The Fool. A touch of 80s in a modern song, that’s what gets the chorus to bloom. It’s emotionally charged and powerful. A clearer piano and more aggressive riffs are up next. Angel of Light is cathartic like that. Wide, it’s unmissable and based on some great rock classics. Yet, like for Play The Fool, there’s something relatable and inextricably linked to what seems to be a generational mental state for many.

I am certain this link is crafted by the band’s sincerity and passion. Each note sung or played is sculpted by the New Yorker’s raw energy. And if there are some classic elements, the textures are all balanced. The EP closes on Spent / Burn, which winks at Emo-rock Golden Age without ever crossing the line of hardcore. Tender, melancholic, and troubled, I still manage to find some upbeat glimmering lights in it, despite its sombre lyrics. If it’s a pretty short one, Future Mondays is clearly promising. Their infectious energy will be a great part of my future Mondays.
