The end of a story is always tastier when it has an epilogue. So Deap Vally does just that with their ultimate release: (ep)ilogue. Review.
(EP)ILOGUE – DEAP VALLY
This is the end. As Deap Vally has just achieved their extensive farewell tour, which started last November, the duo has released a very last EP cleverly named (ep)ilogue. On it, of course, some blues-infused rock tracks, a Muddy Waters cover, and some disco and electro tracks too. Because that is what Deap Vally was all about. They have a passionate free spirit and an indulging rock soul. So, if the duo is going their separate ways, after over a decade of collaboration, they do it with fucking panache!
Sharp riffs, precise drums, a touch of synths and those brave, textured and powerful vocals. They form the core of It’s My World that shines bright. The band doesn’t want to leave the stage with a melodramatic swan song. No, they’d rather use up all the energy they’ve always displayed on stage to end Deap Vally. But this EP has barely begun. Another new track is Gonna Get to You, incredibly catchy from the get-go. Through its atmosphere, it made me think of a long and difficult desert road. But it’s not a road that predicts Lindsey Troy’s and Julie Edwards futures, no need to panic.
To connect with the disco-pop Cotton Candy – also fantastically memorable and danceable, really don’t miss that one – they put in a cover. Mannish Boy, originally by Muddy Waters. And it’s well done indeed! The cover conveys all the love and passion they have for that legendary blues! …and then, it’s the end of the band. With a remix of It’s My World. If the song is an anthem to free spirits and be able to be your authentic self, the remix feels both darker and intoxicating. There, (ep)ilogue ends, taking away the last sounds from the band known as Deap Vally. Now, let’s turn the page, move on and keep an eye on Lindsey Troy (a solo album is in the works) and Julie Edwards (with Dosiopath). The end is only a new beginning after all!
