Chaos? It’s a friend. And even a best friend to ALIAS who EMBRACE CHAOS with his new album. Review of an unmissable curiosity.
EMBRACE CHAOS – ALIAS
Complete artist, multi-instrumentalist, director, and more, ALIAS only asks for one thing: EMBRACE CHAOS. Getting lost in his deep universe is now available to all with this new album. There’s a condition, though, and it’s accepting to not know what you’re fully in for. True, he may have some strong rock base, yet ALIAS doesn’t ever cross-off any genre, style or tone. And all of them can simply pop up in a bass line, in a riff, or a rap. If SAIGON, the first track, is a curiosity, EMPTY HEAD is the one which perfectly embodies that blend. As guests, he invites KROY and Cadence Weapon. This song is followed by the fantastic and groovy TRUTH OR TRUST, on which it’s virtually impossible to stay still, with Virginie B and Meggie Lennon as guests.
With his precise productions – and I highly recommend listening to them with headphones to fully enjoy the stereo work on them, from the get-go – ALIAS brings a wonderful electro aura to his album. The grain it has doesn’t cancel his other inspirations’ textures, like jazz, rock as I mentioned earlier, or hip-hop. BAD KIDS is a great example with its deep, sombre and dramatic tone, in a punk-trap way. DEMO 3 (I WANNA HUG YOU SO BAD) contrasts with nice funk basses in a summery instrumental whole. Later, DIET COKE ON ICE brings back that same vibe. It’s a surprising split in genres. He goes back to punk-rock, almost classical, with MOTHER LOVE. And it might seem like a classic punk-rock one, it is still surprising, in a very satisfying manner.
Virginie B comes back with her great voice on EVIL TWIN, nervous and spotless even in its most destroyed ways. Another gap shows next with the electro WATER CALLS, followed by the stressed and catchy CURSED. To close this new record, there are the vibrating and urging OLD MAN, and the intriguing and more experimental COCKTAILS AND DREAMS, as our selected track below. In the end, EMBRACE CHAOS by ALIAS is a real gold mine of sounds. It’s an adventure that can be played ten times in a row and yet feel and taste different each time.
