TRANSPARENT THINGS – GIA FORD
It’s by the side of a pool that Gia Ford prolongs the summer and introduces her album Transparent Things. Poolside is a calm fever, a welcome and reassuring heatwave, with a sharp and romantic electric progression. What a beautiful introduction, offering a stark contrast to the theme of the album: alienation! It is undoubtedly one of the best ways to discover Gia Ford‘s sublime voice. And she doesn’t stop there, moving seamlessly into the groovy Loveshot. Infused with funk, its pop-rock tones invite listeners to the dance floor. Well, we’re hooked, that’s for sure. It’s time for her to start step two of her conquest. That’s where Gia Ford takes more time to explore, contemplating the landscapes she continues to evoke brilliantly through stories of marginal characters.
But the holiday mood lingers—bitter with Alligator, sophisticated with Buzzing On You. Gia Ford indulges in poetic romantic impulses and others that are more direct, more frank. Captivating, her music embraces the feminine-masculine spectrum, makes it her own, transforms it, and produces something new, unique to her sound. Falling In Love Again arrives at this moment with all its subtlety, grace, and emotional vocals. Then Paint Me Like A Woman follows closely, with a sharper tone and an equally gripping atmosphere. It’s one of my favourites on this record!
A touch of vintage folk in Try Changing brings back the sunshine, while a more gospel tone questions spirituality and ethics in Housewife Dreams Of America. In Don’t Drown Me Out, the theme of water reappears, once again bringing a sense of restfulness with an undercurrent of sadness. The Porcupine, more pop and upbeat, precedes the final track, Our Mutual Friend. With this, Gia Ford concludes Transparent Things and what felt like an eternal, gentle end-of-summer. More profound, it reveals a bit more of the darkness that each track truly holds. It’s all a matter of opacity. An incredibly captivating debut album!
