BERRIES has recently released a well-rounded second album. Self-titled, the record really has a lot to offer! Review.
BERRIES – BERRIES
Simply titled BERRIES, after the band’s own name, this second album arrives two years after their debut, How We Function. That previous record was already sharp, fierce, and relevant, but it didn’t venture where this new release dares to go. The opening track, Barricade, aligns with what they’ve always done: powerful, saturated, and straightforward rock. But there’s more to it—the guitar work is hypnotic. With Creature, they deliver again with gripping textures and infectious riffs. While their style remains similar, there’s a shift, an artistic maturity that allows BERRIES to take their time a bit more here. And then, Blurry Shapes explores more pop-inspired sounds and melodies. This freshness isn’t the only surprise on the album.
Watching Wax gently pulls them back to a sharper rock sound, tinged with both punk and metal influences. Yet, the track maintains a deeply catchy quality in its dark atmosphere. It’s one of my favourites here. It’s followed by Balance, a more acoustic and raw piece that becomes the band’s softest track yet. Once again, with this album, BERRIES don’t hesitate to take their time, and Balance is the perfect example. It beautifully highlights the natural textures of the band’s vocals. It’s sublime and a perfect break before returning with the saturated sound of the deeply cathartic Jagged Routine.
This Space then plays with its rhythms, constantly taking us to places unexpected for that kind of song. Next, Narrow Tracks has fun blending classic rock with pop again, while Control tickles the band’s roots with an eerie atmosphere. BERRIES close their second album with Crumpled Clothes, tying everything together. While the band takes more time to play with genres, they maintain the sharp, rough and torn textures that have become their signature. Don’t miss it!
