Feminist punk garage is on the menu, with Disillusion by Pythies. This new EP is bursting with energy and very promising! Review.
DISILLUSION – PYTHIES
Their Instagram description reads ‘Slut Grunge’. Beyond the provocation, there’s a core of truth: their sound is grunge, sexy, and unapologetic. We love it and want more. Far from being an insult, the trio reclaims the term, navigating the industry with guitars blazing and a defiant attitude. Their new EP, released in late September, is a perfect example. Pythies plays with some religious symbols, making Disillusion the sacred emblem of their feminist punk. Blondinette kicks off with an irresistible garage sound and a bite—literally—in the lyrics. They’re not here to be walked over!
With I Pythie You, they tackle the ageism that women often face. The raw sound might be a bit rougher than necessary, but it’s promising nonetheless. Ouroboros features clearer guitars, though the vocals remain a bit subdued. It’s a shame because the track’s energy is fantastic. The imagery of a snake biting its own tail gives way to Dissociation, which leans more into metal influences. Here, the lyrics and chaotic riffs convey anxiety with precision. They deliver a spot-on musical portrayal of dissociation caused by anxiety, all while staying true to their punk style.
And then it’s time to close the EP. The metal influences are still there with Toy, which is undoubtedly the highlight of the release. Clear vocals, biting lyrics, rumbling drums and bass, and a catchy melody—all serve their rage. With Disillusion, Pythies makes a strong impression. It’s not perfect in its form all the time, but the message resonates with its anger and determination. I predict that this won’t be the last time I’ll talk about Pythies. Keep an eye on them!
