On I Don’t Believe In Bad Luck, Tea Eater bares their teeth, delves into their dark side… and sings about butter and waffles. Review of an incredible album!
I DON’T BELIEVE IN BAD LUCK – TEA EATER
By exploring what it means to be the villain of the story – whether your own or someone else’s – willingly or not, Tea Eater sets a dark, cool atmosphere throughout the record. And they haven’t forgotten that even villains need to eat. Preferably waffles – as we hear in the groovy punk track The Waffle Song. ET vs Jesus continues the theme of our relationship with the universe – and what we can ask of it. Most importantly, though: what will our fortune teller do with her powers? There’s humour here too, subtly woven into even the most serious musical lines.
Being seen as the villain often comes down to refusing to please everyone. On People Pleaser, the message is crystal clear: it’s a hard no! Then comes the brutal, biting John Lemon, bringing the candle’s magic to life. The album uses the imagery of pagan witchcraft cleverly throughout – in both lyrics and its eerie, mystical mood. Invasion of the Bee Girls and I Am a Bug are a perfect pair – violent, hazy energy coursing through both. Our protagonist needs to let off steam – and make things very clear in the explosive You Again. If I Don’t Believe in Bad Luck makes you want to turn to the dark side, Tea Eater also makes you crave waffles. With butter. The album ends on the funky, psychedelic Butter. And it’s incredible.
