In our playlist of the week, we’re diving into our emotions and travelling through powerful, emotional tracks that arrived at the right place at the right time.
There’s some gritty rock on the menu for this playlist of the week. That’s how things kick off, thanks to El Bebe’s stoner rock in the vibrant, dark, and unsettling Mouth of the Wolf. Heavy basslines, a clear voice, and classic rock touches that flirt with metal make this a truly explosive track! Gabrielle Ornate also comes in strong with her new single Stolen Faces. She explores power, psyche, and freedom, drawing on myth and reality. Her polished aesthetic remains as impressive as ever! Very Apes also create a fairly mystical and unsettling atmosphere with the brutal HOW LONG. Very promising, it’s a great gateway into the world of this French band! In the same brutal vein, Meat Bags delivers with Guts. It hits hard, and the band dares to sprinkle in a bit of humour to balance its biting tone.
Sarah Shafey also packs a punch with her heavy riffs. She shows it in the growling I Lied to You, with a hint of mischief and pride in her voice. The track occasionally shifts into a more serious tone, and Romphonics follow very naturally with Tengo miedo de perderme. Classic solo and modern progression – you can tell this Argentinian band has a lot to offer in the indie rock scene. There’s a layer of melancholy in the atmosphere.
But it’s not as palpable as in the next track. Ophelia (a fallen angel) by Narotic strikes the perfect balance between distortion and deep melancholy in a Shakespearean rock setting that’s right up my street. The playlist begins to slowly change direction at this point, making it the perfect moment to welcome back Mary Middlefield. She offers contrast between distortion and an ethereal voice with the romantic Will you read my mind?, a captivating invitation.
We dip into folk – just a bit – with Sorry, Peach, discovered through the softness and simplicity of why are you so scared? Intimate in its production, right through to its electric explosion, and introspective in its lyrics, it’s another call to love. For Myriads, however, that question exists only within self-discovery, one’s limits, and breaking points. That’s how the lovely Call It Quits comes in, a track more optimistic than it first appears. Optimistic, too, is Sophie Rayne, despite her doubts, with her new single Fog. The guitars shimmer, highlighting her crystalline voice, a wonder! We round off our playlist of the week, with a burst of sunlit pop-rock from Monotronic, back with Everything Moves. Bright verses and dancey choruses… we couldn’t dream of a better way to start the weekend!
