EL CAMINO – THE NGHIEMS
The first track, El Camino, gives its name to the Oklahoma City-based quintet The Nghiems’ new EP, and shines their path. Their indie pop is full of promises. The main one? Ensuring that these fifteen minutes become part of your summer. And it’s going to be pretty successful if you ask me! Warm summer vibes come to us from the get-go. A tad vintage with its balanced synths and vocal effects, the guitars are hypnotising and invite us to take our time. In the lyrics and tempo, the music approaches contemplation while retaining some vivid flashes.
If touches of melancholia are then popping up, like on Nobody Move, it’s never without hope and dreams. The lyrics are simple, efficient, realistic, and catchy, and the chorus is captivating. We’re floating, easily carried by the sound, moving forward. The band keeps making its place in our summer playlist as earworm-makers with the beautiful Stay (NaNaNaNa). With it, The Nghiems touch upon romantic ballads. It’s sincere and soft. The consistent backing vocals add some depth to a well-balanced dynamic, and its energetic build-up sends us through to space without explosive effects. It’s all softness.
This new EP closes with KPop Band. Rest assured that the band hasn’t drastically changed genre or style, but they do explore this side of the industry through lyrics and narration. What would have been their musical career if they had made KPop? The question is there, hanging, opening to dreams of travels and trials. And why not! From one side of the world to the other, it’s a track that creates smiles. Actually, the whole EP does that. The Nghiems is a wonderful band that really ought to be listened to, especially if you enjoy delicate pop-rock, and El Camino is your door to them. Fresh and fun, can’t wait to hear more from them!
