Garbage returned to the scene end of May with their 8th studio album, Let All That We Imagine Be The Light. It’s a remarkable unmissable future classic! Review.
LET ALL THAT WE IMAGINE BE THE LIGHT – GARBAGE
Garbage has nothing to prove anymore. The band is a major actor of the rock scene and their new album, Let All That We Imagine Be The Light, is the logical continuity of their legend. This new record is filled with love, wounds, hopes, politics, rage. And it carries lyrics as poignant as Shirley Manson’s voice is iconic. It opens with There’s No Future In Optimism, linking the world’s cynic views with the hope of better days we want to keep up. The band’s style is exactly as we can expect, not surprising but so well rounded through harsh and dream-like textures.
Chinese Fire Horse is both catchy and biting, with a fiery energy that will follow the band on the rest of the record. It’s raw, visceral and cohesive. Hypnotic on Hold and on the mystical and sensual Have We Met (The Void), Garbage builds an explorative yet worrying universe throughout the album. Speaking of explorations, Sisyphus gets the band to lean on other genres they know well. They blend more electro elements to its production. Then again, it’s pretty hard to let go of the dream-like and spiritual atmosphere they’re setting.
Garbage has always been equally politic and poetic. So, even if the overall atmosphere seems to stay even, sometimes thrilling and cold, Radical plunges head first in that duality. Keeping a dark vibe, Love to Give is up next, itself followed by quite a change in atmosphere. Indeed, Get Out My Face AKA Bad Kitty is electrifying thanks to its vivid and thrilling tempo. It’s baring its teeth and I love it! R U Happy Now resonates like a threat, a growling storm, a need for change. Lastly, Garbage closes Let All That We Imagine Be The Light with The Day That I Met God. Once again, the band doesn’t hesitate to talk about spirituality, mystical experiences whilst getting into a blend of psyche, rock and experimental sound. Garbage might not need to prove anything anymore, but they’re still incredibly generous!
