It’s time again for the playlist of the week, packed with punk, politics, and volcanic energy, just the way we like it!
The playlist, this week, dives straight in with the bitter and biting track Sick Sad World by punk duo Bob Vylan. That flawless flow, packed with political messages that always hit the mark, makes for a brilliant opening! Next up are the heavy, catchy riffs of Decrepit Youths on Sound Of The Underground. It sits somewhere between gearing up for rebellion and pure party, and it’s an instant favourite. Love Ghost keeps feeding the dark, almost mystical vibe setting in, with another of their beautiful bilingual rock-rap blends on Geek, featuring Ervin River. In the punk family, I’d like Belgian Boy. Naturally, Captain Kaiser steps forward with an electric, raw and moving performance of this track. And emotionally, it’s simply irresistible.
Isaac Neilson is equally on edge with his new single. Spiked (Mind Eraser) is both a chilling thriller and a furious, cathartic piece with striking contrasts in energy. Francophone band Fauzene then seems to soothe our souls… until their explosive chorus on the unifying Sauter ensemble. And once again, the contrast grabs me straight away. And it’s not over. Next is Feral Family with Feels So Right, which… indeed feels perfectly at home here. Polished but not too much, this is further proof we should be keeping an eye on them. The Journey Back then crashes in with a dose of nostalgia and even a touch of metal. Excuses delivers effective, straightforward pop-punk with a perfectly catchy chorus that makes it a must-hear of the genre!
With Creepshow, Wax Jaw celebrate their new album. Vocalist Shane Morgan leads the band through a liberating moment in an atmosphere that hovers between chill and celebration. Grandma’s Ashes follow up with the equally intriguing, mystical and yet luminous Saints Kiss. After stargazing, it’s time for rational thought. Alex Little suggests striking a deal on the vibrant, stoner-tinged pop-punk track Sounds Like A Deal. The weekly playlist wraps up with a track that’s more epic, more symphonic, and softer. We’re treated to the grandeur of Mary Middlefield with her new song The Feast, elegant and every bit as captivating as the rest of our selection. Even this kind of track, deep down, feels a little punk these days.
