FLASH: ANTONIO PLACER SEXTET & ANTONIO CAMPOS / SERPENT / ROOK MONROE

Hispanic territories, time travel and a little detour via the Californian coast, here’s today’s selection of just release tunes. Don’t wait for the holidays to discover them. Flashes.

TROVAORES – ANTONIO PLACER SEXTET & ANTONIO CAMPOS

When Grenoble and Grenada are talking together, despite earth and mountains between them, it’s magic. In this new album, Trovaores, with many ravishing savours, the Antonio Placer Sextet is inviting Antonio Campos to sing and create at the crossroads of flamenco and jazz, variety and folk, love and passion. Señora de los mares is marking the middle of the album, recorded with an audience, and deeply moves us like no other song on this opus, despite their power and lively spirit. A trip, a flight, it’s both peaceful and energetic. To listen to without further ado.

TIME FOR A RETHINK – SERPENT

Their sound comes and goes from a very 80s New Wave, to an also very 80s punk, and a lovely funk. And we could be afraid that it’d feel outdated. However, it is not. Serpent is a new beginning that slithers from track to track, bringing some modern effects in the production that underline the vintage character of Time For A Rethink. Don’t Think Twice and Love/Hate are showing it beautifully with round riffs and spicy and sharp attacks coming from keyboard and effects. Overall, this is an EP that really needs to get out there and actually doesn’t need any label.

CALIFORNIALAND – ROOK MONROE

Rook Monroe has a super soft voice although it’s tinted occasionally by some autotune and that’s exactly what blew our minds. His new EP, Californialand, is a boarding pass for the wild American West. We get to admire waves glowing under the sunset while listening to Dreaming, Honey, and even Jolie, either with a fire camp or a dancefloor nearby. From Dandelion to Say Goodbye To My Children, Monroe is soberly setting the frame for these paintings that he then animates delicately. This EP is made of remarkable pop music that stands out. The last proof? the voice and piano from Pink & Purple, our favourite.
