FLASH : JIM YOUNGER’S SPIRIT / SPLEENARIUM / NOFX VS. FRANK TURNER

For the last Thursday of the month, we’ve decided to have a catch-up session. These three flashes are focusing on albums and EPs that we missed at their release despite their undeniable qualities.

EL MALPAIS – JIM YOUNGER’S SPIRIT

What’s better than music to summon a spirit? Jim Younger’s Spirit has made this bet. And who’s Jim Younger? One of Jesse James’ hold-up partner, confederate and then humanist who’s ended his own life. A character of whom the mystic story is invoked with balance by the French band, especially through their new album El Malpais in which New Mexico desert seems very welcoming (Girl From The Mountain Country). Psyche and stoner at the same time, the borders are fading. Polar Younger’s voice goes far and the fresh sand of the night then starts burning under our feet.

VOLUME 1 – SPLEENARIUM

On the 20th of November 2020, French band Spleenarium has gone forward by releasing their debut album Volume 1, beautifully constructed. Inspired by rock and pop music but mainly by folk and Americana, their mix is unique. We’re flying to a universe both warm and mystical with Aerialist, and then get to sit by the fire with Late. From the first notes of Dead Skin to the last of On a Sunny Road, passing by the soft and stormy Messanges, we’re seeing life in sepia. We can’t wait for their Volume 2.

WEST COAST VS. WESSEX – NOFX VS. FRANK TURNER

On the 31st of July 2020, California and the West of England have fought on the ring. NOFX covered Frank Turner, and Frank Turner covered NOFX. On the same album, West Coast Vs. Wessex. And everything is, of course, sparkled with humour and self-derision. We got the SoCal guys singing Thatcher Fucked the Kids in their own heavy-ska-punk with a tempted British accent, and we love it as much as we love their European stooge calming their fiery tracks like Bob with his folk-punk. They’ve split the songs ideally for vinyl with a first side US and a second side UK. It’s fun, it’s cheeky, and it’s a great listen.
