FLASH : SAINT SISTER / EVE WHELAN / THE SHOP WINDOW

For this week’s new releases, we’re staying in our islands, with a particular focus on Ireland as it proposes us some charming feminine voices. Flashes.

WHERE I SHOULD END – SAINT SISTER

It’s a generous and dreamy Pop the Irish duo Saint Sister proposes with Where I Should End. The vocals are joining on different levels, vaporous and gentle, but thanks to a couple of clear guitars and an overall encapsulating the 80s, we keep our toes on the ground whilst the rest of our soul travels high and far. Karaoke Song is a perfect example of this feeling. Then, we get a couple of Celtic tones here and there, discreet but deep and marking the two artists identity strongly, as well as their love for the beautiful Emerald Isle (Irish Hour, House 9). Fascinating and made of parcels of dreams, it’s a perfect album for a tea and an introspective moment.

REFLECTION – EVE WHELAN

Ireland continues to make us smile with Eve Whelan’s EP, Reflection. The young woman, still a student, has written and sang her experience with grief. Moving and intimate, these texts get a universal resonance thanks to the subtle and never morose notes. If grief and its different stages are, indeed, at the heart of the record, there’s nothing that pulls down Eve Whelan’s talent here. The vocals are high, clear and the emotions are unveiled with reserve, modesty and fairness. The whole thing reflects our own vulnerabilities to us as the last notes of Promise fade away in the silence.

THE STATE OF BEING HUMAN – THE SHOP WINDOW

The small stingy guitars of Mannequin Lies are welcoming us on the hooky The State Of Being Human, debut album by British band The Shop Window. Warm, yet bearing a touch of nostalgia, it pushes us into a lovely summery evening, the sun setting down, full of insouciance and of bright memories. Out of Reach could become a hymn to these evening. And we can’t help but dance to it. The record isn’t far from the beach either, with Evacuate and I Realise, and we understand how this album is going to follow us through all summer. An excellent start for The Shop Window.
