Sometimes, you have to take a break from a hectic life and look at herons. These majestic birds have inspired Miyazaki as much as they did Alice Merton. The London-based singer comes back this year with a gripping, lively and personal EP. Inspired by meaningful meetings as much as by transitioning moments and all the emotions that come with them, Alice Merton turns them into music with talent and enthusiasm on Heron. The first track, run away girl, showcases that spirit beautifully. A call for adventure, escape, renewal, and freedom, Merton shines on her fiery pop-rock.

Pick me up comes next with more softness but as much light. Resolutely pop with its 80s-synths layers, Alice Merton doesn’t hesitate to borrow all genres to get wild. Irresistible, she signs some incredibly universal lyrics on the bop don’t leave me alone with my thoughts. A wonderful way to avoid spiralling down with intrusive thoughts whilst invading the dancefloor with friends.

Pour how well do you know your feelings, l’artiste se fait plus introspective encore, dans une atmosphère néo-rétro du plus bel effet. Sa voix accroche immédiatement puis est portée par les chœurs aériens du refrain. Et cette énergie, cette grandeur, elle la porte aussi sur between the lines. Ici, Alice Merton fait un excellent choix pour clore Heron. Une production épurée souligne la puissance de sa voix, et les arrangements orchestraux montent progressivement en parallèle. Sublime, cet EP c’est vraiment la marque d’un magnifique retour, émotionnel et libre.
