FLASH: CALL IT A DAY – JOVI SKYLER

Edited with Afterlight

For Call It A Day, Jovi Skyler is inspired by particularly challenging stories as much as he is by psych rock and punk for this raw EP. Review.

CALL IT A DAY – JOVI SKYLER

The ever-productive Jovi Skyler is back with a new EP, released just at the start of April, and named Call It A Day. Bright and psychedelic, the Australian artist confirms here his adoration for 90s punk rock and sonic experimentations. Here, amidst the chaos of some riffs, he affirms his brand, his universe, too. The first track, Asshole, is deeply human. It’s a realization process, a moment when we find ourselves on the wrong side of the conversation, when we say or make a massive mistake, a moment of self-loathing. With a classic tone, his distortion-layered singing keeps a wonderful emotional power. It’s an essential element of Skyler’s music.

Everything seems to be coming from his guts. On Lil Bo Weep, he pays tribute to the late artist Lil Bo Weep, from Adelaide, who died in 2022. The young artist’s demons, hardships, and pain are the core of this track. Jovi Skyler tells it all through his lyrics and his heartbreaking riffs, wounded and chaotic, also marked by deep sorrow. For the video, Skyler has edited images of the singer and vlogger his way, with the right balance to show her pain and his respect.

Frankenstein follows with a lighter tone. Through it comes an acoustic guitar, giving birth to a blend of bright hope and profound melancholy. Rumble ends the EP with a catchy rhythm and air, some sharp riffs, and keeps the dark undertones the whole record has brought up so far. Call It A Day is an open wound and the way to close it thanks to this mixture of psychedelic-punk Jovi Skyler plays with. Powerful, textured, it’s as raw in its form and its themes. And it’s exactly why it has so much cathartic energy!
