CRUSH – PALES

Crush everything so you don’t get crushed. That’s how I’d sum up the energy of PALES on their new EP, Crush. Aggressive, raw, brutal, and almost experimental at times, there’s an urgency in the band’s music. It’s initially winding in the playful vocals of their lead singer, before exploding on the walls with a powerful riff. Piece of Meat illustrates it as the perfect opener. The second part of the track is particularly biting. This urge to destroy everything then mixes with a deep sense of dread, reflected in the dark aesthetic the band has chosen in this first track, as well as on the thrilling Uppercut.

This blend is not for every soul. You’ve been warned. There’s something dark in PALES’ brutal rock that sends chills down your spine. However, it becomes easy to embrace these chills, the terrible and the wonderful ones, from the first listen. Superstar, which marks the middle of the EP with its catchy melody, still holds onto this idea. It manifests through a grating atmosphere in its guitars and textures, coupled with a menacing aura.

Après l’angoisse arrive l’acceptation du chaos et de sa capacité à nous faire plonger dans une spirale de vie hédoniste. C’est le banger 1518 qui prend place, et là encore, le grincement des riffs n’enlève rien à la menace qui plane… mais invite, dans le même temps, à se perdre dans le plaisir. Pour finir Crush, c’est un titre de plus de 7 minutes que PALES propose. Dans la continuité de cette esthétique hédoniste et chaotique, le groupe nous prend la main et nous attire dans une Dangerous Dance. Vif, hypnotique et fort en adrénaline, le titre donne une fin cohérente à l’opus qui me laisse à bout de souffle. Cathartique ou inducteur de panique, à vous de voir. Moi, j’adore !
