To enjoy your long weekend, if you do have one, what’s better than a lil’ playlist of the week? Let’s go!
It’s a brilliant new track I’d like to present first. The cheeky, free, and open-to-contradiction Take It All Off by the Irish band VERA, led by Sarah Toner. No doubt, their mix of modern alt-rock wrapped in vintage pop is bound to become unmissable! We stay in the pop realm and the theme of reclaiming freedom, this time with a folk touch and an infectious summery melody, with Wildfire by the extraordinary Iris Gold. The textures of her voice are captivating! This bright atmosphere only grows from there, as we discover King Gnu’s new track, bathed in disco-pop, TWILIGHT!!!. The band really is at the top of their game when it comes to blending genres! IMAGINE by Boko Yout naturally follows, with its bubbly synths and hypnotic tempo to die for. But be warned, its flow and electric build-up are what you’ll actually fall for!
Fancy adding a bit of double bass pedal to our pop? And a touch of light throat-singing too? So here come Babymetal featuring the dazzling Poppy for their metalcore bop from me to u. Not exactly calmer, but definitely more classic punk, next up are Problem Patterns. In collab with Matt Korvette, the quartet release the biting Sad Old Woman, a feminist queerpunk take on ageing that really hits the mark. And since we’re on the topic of the image of ageing bodies, we move on to Viagra Boys with their devilishly effective The Bog Body. Guaranteed mosh pits! To wrap up this electric phase and mark the transition to the next, we have (and it’s rare enough to mention) a cover. From new-wave to no-wave, it’s just a few steps that Skinner takes admirably with his version of Eisbär.
This final part of the playlist amplifies the bittersweet atmosphere settling in. First, with the superb return of Garbage and There’s No Future in Optimism. Dark romantic pessimism, the track shines with hope and love, turning dark moments into gold. And Fontaines D.C. wouldn’t argue otherwise. They expand Romance with a deluxe version including Before You I Just Forget, whose orchestral arrangements highlight lyrics addressing pretence and inner turmoil. The theme runs deep. The desire to rise above it all inspires Black Honey with the liberated Dead, thus announcing their next album. That same urge to overcome pain gives words to QUEEN BEE in their brilliant, punk-tinged pop track High Flame. It’s with that touch of gentleness that the playlist of the week comes to an end. See you next Friday!
