Without a shadow of a doubt, A Real Good Person In A Real Bad Place is one of the most expected albums of the year for us. Under the spell of the New Yorker since we’ve discovered Let Me Live/Let Me Die thanks to Spotify’s algorithm, we wondered what shades would colour his debut album. With a strong contrast, the record gets gimmicks from other genres and jumps over the limits we sometimes set for rock music. And that’s why we love Des Rocs.
Tick is a very efficient intro that reflects the DIY punk side of the record. It’s the ultra-powerful and epic Why Why Why that comes next and captivates us, followed by the short break break break – a… break – that baits us for Imaginary Friends. That’s when we burn the dancefloor. MMC gets us back to something darker, more torn, eviler in some ways. With its Queen-like outro, the track hits the mark. We’re a lot more surprised by The Devil Inside, more on the electro side of things, and Rabbit Hole, which gives us vertigo.
After the first listen, we also love the curious Ruby with the Sharpest Lies and the catchy Hanging by a Thread, of course, that both add layers to this beautiful album. Strong by its textures and colours alike, Des Rocs’ voice is under a new light and we love it from the deepest to the highest and vibrating note. This world is dark. Des Rocs is among those that will push rock music further.
